Huntsville Unit is a medium security state penitentiary in Walker County, Texas. It has a large brick wall surrounding it; hence it has the moniker the Wall unit. The state penitentiary is famous as one of the most famous execution chambers in the US. As a result, most male and female death row inmates spend their last hour in prison. 

The prison hosts are medium to minimum-security inmates. However, death row inmates are only transported to the prison for execution. Most inmates in Huntsville are transient and can work various jobs in prison. Jobs inmates can access include welding and machining, textile and garments, and landscaping at the prison cemetery. 

The inmates at Huntsville have several educational programs they can benefit from, such as literacy courses, adult basic education classes, and the opportunity to earn a GED. There are vocational courses such as automotive mechanics I and II, culinary arts, and imaging technologies. Substance abuse and sex offender programs are offered to help with the behavior of the inmates.

Sending a Mail/Care Package

All inmates at the state penitentiary have a right to receive mail while at the prison. All the mail must have the inmate's full name, the DOC number, and the appearance address. Visitors cannot drop off packages during visits or at any other time. Sending Money

Phone calls

While felons have a right to make calls to their loved ones, they can only call a small list. The list is created when one enters the prison and is updated through the convicts' incarceration. All the calls made by inmates are recorded except for legal calls.  The Calls are limited to 20 minutes to allow other inmates to use the service. Only the offender can call their loved one and are not allowed to receive calls while in jail. In case of an emergency, such as the passing of a loved one, you can call the inmate's chaplain or counselor. You can make calls every day between 7 am and 10 pm unless there is an emergency. 

Visitation

All inmates are allowed to receive visitors from their pre-approved lists. An inmate can only add you to the list when they know your full name and date of birth. All visitors must carry a current photo ID. Visitor vehicles will be checked before entry.
