Harris county jail is one of the largest county jails in Texas. Despite this, it managed to overcrowd in 2010 with up to 12,000 inmates though it can only hold 9,434. Due to this, some inmates in the jail are sent to other counties and, in some cases, across the state, to Louisiana. Nonetheless, the jail is very large and divided into four annexes:

  • 1200 Jail
  • 701 Jail Annex
  • 1307 Jail Annex
  • 711 Jail Annex

The one jail holds pretrial inmates, those suffering mental challenges, and those serving short sentences. It is allowed to hold both male and female inmates across the county. It’s been in operation since 1972 and remains the third-largest county jail in the country. The county sheriff runs the jail.

Sending Money

Everyone needs money, even when they are locked up in jail. Luckily the American system let inmates in all types of jail receive commissary funds from well-wishers. The commissary is used at the jail canteen to buy necessities. The common items you can buy at the jail canteen are personal clothing, undergarments, and socks.  Cash can be sent to jail in numerous ways, such as dropping the cash at the jail kiosk or lobby, depositing online, using a money order, and calling an agent to assist you with making the deposit. The cash help inmates find a footing when their sentence ends.

Phone calls

Follow up on your loved one locked up in jail with daily phone calls. The phone calls made at the jail are timed and recorded for security purposes. Securus manages all the calls. Anyone can create an account with Securus, which has multiple payment plans.   The advance connect plan lets you manage the people an inmate can call, while the debit account plan is more open. Direct billing lets you receive a bill for all calls an inmate makes. Inanimate can also utilize the traditional collect calls and read outbound voicemails.
